Gained fame as one of the first bespectacled players in baseball. He was a pitcher best known for his time with the Cincinnati Reds. He also managed for three years following his retirement from playing.
He learned to play baseball in Caton, New York from his family.
He set the major league record for completing the most games in one season, with 75 in 1879. He had an earned run average of 2.28.
His brother Deacon White also starred in the major leagues both as a catcher and a third baseman.
He played for the Cincinnati Reds for almost 90 years before the great Pete Rose .
