
Virginia Hamilton Adair
ABOUT VIRGINIA HAMILTON ADAIR
American poet and author famous for Beliefs and Blasphemies and Ants on the Melon. The 1996 publication of the latter work made Adair famous when she was well into her eighties.
She wrote her first poem at the age of two and began writing on a regular basis at age six. She later studied English at both Mount Holyoke College and Radcliffe College.
She taught for more than two decades at California State Polytechnic University in Pomona.
She married historian Douglass Adair in 1936. Her husband committed suicide in 1968.
She was a contemporary of fellow American poet Langston Hughes .
