ABOUT SAMUEL SEABURY

Religious figure who served as the first bishop of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the United States. During the American Revolution, he was a supporter of British authority. He wrote pamphlets urging Americans not to seek independence, which he published anonymously under the name "A. W. Farmer."

He studied medicine at Yale University and the University of Edinburgh .

He became an Anglican priest in the year 1753 and also practiced medicine. He went to England and attempted to be consecrated as a bishop, but was not able to as an American citizen. He was later ordained in Aberdeen, Scotland.

He and his wife Mary Hicks had five children.

He was a character in the musical Hamilton and was portrayed by Thayne Jasperson .
