Screenwriter and actress who frequently performed with and wrote screenplays for Greta Garbo .
Her birth name was Salomea Steuermann, and she was born in an area of the Austro-Hungarian Empire that is now part of the Ukraine.
She traveled to the United States in 1928 and ended up staying in California for many years, as a result of the rise of Hitler in Europe.
She was the sister of pianist Eduard Steuermann . She married Austrian screenwriter and director, Berthold Viertel, in 1918, and the couple had three sons before divorcing in 1947.
She co-starred with Greta Garbo in the 1930 German film version of Anna Christie, and she also wrote several screenplays for Garbo, including Anna Karenina and Queen Christina.
