He taught himself musical composition and expression as a child growing up in South Central Los Angeles.

He served as musical director for numerous top artists, including Whitney Houston , Ray Charles , and Beyonce .

He and his wife Karen had a son named Sean Anthony.

He took over as bandleader on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno after Kevin Eubanks left.
