Best known for composing the song Home! Sweet Home! Most of his success was in London.
He started a paper called The Pastime while he was a student at Union College.
He was posthumously inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1970.
He grew up with eight siblings.
He was appointed as the American Consul in Tunis by former President John Tyler in 1842.
