He started wearing a mask after an operation left him with a sore nose.
He was one of the first goaltenders to face shooters standing and squared up; he was also the first to skate behind the net to drop the puck off for his defensemen.
His father carved a hockey stick from a tree, and he, as a young man, improvised a tennis ball for a puck.
He was a longtime teammate of the legendary Maurice Richard .
