ABOUT HARRY CHANDLER

Los Angeles newspaperman who amassed one of the largest real estate holdings in the U.S.

He was working as a delivery boy for Harrison Gray Otis, the publisher of The Los Angeles Times, when Otis hired him to manage the paper.

He founded or helped found many of Los Angeles' landmarks, including the Hollywood Bowl, the California Institute of Technology or Caltech, and the Coliseum to which he also brought the 1923 Olympics.

His oldest son Norman took over running The Times after his death and turned it into a nationally respected publication.

His grandson Otis Chandler continued to run The Los Angeles Times and invest in the city's cultural institutions.
