He along with his brother-in-law and a law partner were on a tight deadline in 1948 to file a brief and found themselves sorely in need of immediate secretarial help.
He and his two partners pooled $7,000 to open a temp agency in Milwaukee that despite its name hired mostly women at first.
He grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, with his family operating a small clothing store.
He and Chris Gardner were both Wisconsin-born entrepreneurs.
