ABOUT ELLIOTT CARTER
Composer who received the Pulitzer Prize twice. He was known for his use of atonality and complex rhythmic structures.
He majored in English at Harvard College, but made time to study music and sing with the Harvard Glee Club. He earned his Master's degree in music from Harvard in 1932.
He won the Grammy for Best Classical Contemporary Composition in 1994 for his Violin Concerto.
He was born into the wealthy family of businessman Elliott Carter Sr. and Florence Chambers. He married Helen Frost-Jones in 1939.
He was encouraged to pursue music by Charles Ives who sold insurance to his family.
