Austin E. Lathrop
ABOUT AUSTIN E. LATHROP
One of Alaska's first millionaires who fiercely opposed its joining the United States.
He developed an interest in Alaska with news of its gold deposits, and he bought half an interest in a steam schooner and brought it to Alaskan waters to provide the goldseekers with transportation.
He owned several businesses around Alaska, which made him fear taxes if it should join the United States.
He was born in Lapeer County, Michigan, to Eugene Lathrop and Susan Miriah Parsons Lathrop.
He may have inspired the character Richard Burton played in the film Ice Palace from 1960.
