She struggled as a teen before graduating from the University of Texas School of Nursing.
She was found not guilty by reason of insanity and was committed to a mental health facility.
She was married to Russell Yates until 2004; her children's names were Noah, John, Paul, Luke, and Mary.
Her tragic story was a partial inspiration for the series Desperate Housewives, according to series creator Marc Cherry .
