ABOUT AMY B SMITH
Mechanical engineering professor, inventor, and founder of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology's D-Lab for creative design. D-Lab's mission is to work with people around the world to aid global poverty.
She received both her bachelor's and master's degrees from MIT, taking a break from her studies to join the Peace Corps.
Her numerous inventions include the screen-less, motorized hammer mill, and the phase-change incubator.
Her father, Arthur Smith, was a Professor of Electrical Engineering at MIT.
She and transistor co-creator William Shockley were fellow MIT-educated inventors.
