ABOUT ALBERT E BRUMLEY

20th century shape note gospel music composer. He was known for several wildly popular hymns.

His 1929 hymn 'I'll Fly Away' struck a nerve and became one of the nation's most popular songs. It would go on to be covered by Johnny Cash , The Chuck Wagon Gang, Alan Jackson , Jars of Clay, and George Jones , to name a few.

He founded the Albert E. Brumley Sundown to Sunup Gospel Sing in Springdale, Arkansas, in 1969.

He grew up on a farm in Oklahoma, chopping and picking cotton before finding professional success. He and Goldie Edith Schell wed in 1931. His son Tom Brumley worked as a country music guitarist.

He began his career a generation after German composer Richard Wagner .
