He moved to Chicago, Illinois for college, but soon dropped out due to his career trajectory. He was always interested in combining filmmaking with his interest in politics.

He grew up with his mom Stefanie Mockler and his father Sam Ulayyet. He studied political science at the Indiana University Northwest after attending high school in Chicago.
